Wayne Harkema
Wayne
started diving in 1989 at the age of 42. He took a night class at
the Grand Haven High School for something to do the winter, and
has been hooked ever since. He became a dive shop groupie to get
to know other divers and at that time became friends with many of
the shops instructors.
Wayne started to use his boat for some of the specialty classes.
He then worked his way through the specialty classes to his current
certification as assistant instructor, which he attained in 1994.
In that year he also worked on a dive boat in Michigan as First
Mate and Divemaster. At that time he became familiar with diving
sites around the straits of Mackinac, to Lake Superior's Whitefish
Point, and Grand Traverse Bay. He says that this is the most enjoyable
diving he has done.
Wayne has traveled to many exotic dive sites with the dive shop
groupies such as Hawaii, Cancun, Palau-Yap, Truk Lagoon, Belize,
St. Kitts, Roatan, Bahamas and many trip to Cozumel. He would like
his next trip be to Cuba as he has not been there yet.
At present time, Wayne has logged over 1200 dives. Most of his
non diving time is taken up with his business of selling, installing
and servicing garage doors and openers. The business, Garage Door
Specialists, witch located in Spring Lake, has kept Wayne and Brain
his partner and several employees busy for almost 25 years. But,
being boss has its perks as Wayne often ducks out for an afternoon
of diving.
Wayne lives outside of Spring Lake with his wife Vicky. He has
two daughters, Tracy, age 30 and Amanda, age 20. He enjoys spending
time with his grandsons Alex and Wyatt, by Amanda and Jay and granddaughter
Gypsy by Tracy and Jeff.
